France Tightens the Anti-COVID Restrictions

  • 4
Remote work is mandatory for those who can afford it starting with today. Public meetings on the premises will be limited to 2,000 people.

What happened? France has announced tougher coronavirus restrictions amid concerns about the omicron strain. Starting with January 3, 2022, remote work is mandatory for those who are capable of working from home. All public meetings on the premises will be limited to 2,000 people.

This news appeared due to the fact that more than 100,000 new cases of infection were registered in France a week ago. It is the highest rate in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Quote. French Prime Minister Jean Castex told reporters that the pandemic feels "like a never-ending film" when he presented the new measures at a press conference after a cabinet meeting on the crisis.

Health Minister Olivier Véran said the number of infections is doubling every two days, warning of a huge wave of new cases.

Details. The new rules also include restrictions on public gatherings in the open air - up to 5,000 people - and a ban on food and drinks in long-distance transport.

Nightclubs will be closed until further notice, and only table service will be provided in cafes and bars. Employees who work from home will have to do this at least three times a week. Wearing masks will become mandatory in city centers.

The Government is also reducing the time interval between revaccinations from four months to three.
