The Best Cities in Spain to Live In

Experts of the Consumer Organization of Spain (OCU) surveyed residents of 15 major cities and compiled a rating of the quality of life in the country's megacities.

The indicators affecting the quality of life taken into account are the means of transportation, the level of public safety, the quality of health and education services, the level of environmental pollution, labor market opportunities, cost of living, cleanliness in the city, as well as the housing market.

Rating of cities 2022:

1. Vigo is an important port and industrial city in northwest Spain.
2. Zaragoza is the capital of the autonomous community of Aragon in northeastern Spain.
3. Bilbao is an industrial port city in northern Spain, the unofficial capital of the autonomous community of the Basque Country.
4. Valladolid is a city in the northwest of Spain, one of the main historical and cultural centers of the country.
5. Cordoba is the capital of the province of the same name in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain.
6. Malaga is a port city in the Costa del Sol region of southern Spain.
7. Valencia is a port city on the southeastern coast of Spain.
8. Gijon is a coastal industrial city and port in northern Spain.
9. Alicante is a port city in the southeast of Costa Blanca, the capital of the province of Alicante.
10. Seville is the capital of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. 
11. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital of Gran Canaria, one of the Spanish Canary Islands.
12. Murcia is a university city in the southeast of Spain, the capital of the region of the same name.
13. Palma de Mallorca is a resort town and the capital of the Spanish island of Mallorca.
14. Barcelona is the capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia.
15. Madrid is the capital of Spain in the center of the Iberian Peninsula.

The main conclusions.

• The absolute champion was the city of Vigo, which stands out with a high rating of safety, environmental cleanliness, and order on the streets. There is a high quality of education here. It is great for families with children, as the infrastructure can offer many opportunities for leisure activities, sports and cultural events. Of course, it also has weaknesses: shortcomings in the labor and housing markets.
• Zaragoza is highly valued in all aspects except for cleanliness.
• Bilbao closes the top three, although the survey showed that the cost of living and the quality of housing could be better.
• Madrid and Barcelona were rated as the two worst cities in terms of quality of life. Residents complained about environmental pollution, the high cost of living and real estate, the lack of clean streets.

In Madrid, the quality of medical services and education is low, and Barcelona does not cope with the level of security.

But at the same time, residents also noted strengths: a wide range of employment opportunities, rich cultural life, and an abundance of offers for sports and leisure.
