The rights to real estate remained unsettled for decades.
According to Ersin Tatar, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), about 200,000 tourists has alrready visited the city of Varosha (Maraş), Daily Sabah reports.
Varosha is a suburb of Famagusta, one of the main cities of Northern Cyprus. Before the division of the country, it was actively developing as a tourist quarter, but Greek Cypriots left the city after the outbreak of hostilities, leaving the buildings behind. The city was deserted, and its restoration was virtually impossible due to the UN Security Council resolution, according to which any attempts to settle Varosha by people who are not its residents are considered unacceptable.
The TRNC formed a Real Estate Commission, which sought out Greek Cypriots who owned real estate in Varosha. They were offered to claim their property or sell it. As a result, about 300 applications were received from the previous owners, which allowed restoring the legal status of the properties.
As a result, access to the city was partially opened on October 8, 2020. Varosha has aroused the interest of both residents of the TRNC and tourists from other countries since.
According to Ersin Tatar, Varosha has economic and tourist potential, which will become a source of expansion of Famagusta and the development of Northern Cyprus as a whole.
