What has happened? According to German politicians, the first reading of the sensational law should take place on November 9-10.
The draft of the law was adopted by the members of the German cabinet in August. It was assumed that the document would make it to a Bundestag vote before the summer was up, but the timeline was slowed.
What's next. In Germany, bills are debated three times on the floor of the Bundestag.
During the first reading, a special commission will be appointed, which will then be responsible for organizing public hearings to make any recommendations.
Finally, the law will be voted on at the end of the third reading. If all goes according to plan, the new citizenship law will come into force in April 2024.
The context. The bill offers a multiple citizenship option and reduces the required years of residence before naturalization to five or three years from the previous eight. German language requirements for citizenship will also be eased for members of the so-called "Gastarbeiter" generation.
