In myth, Aphrodite is a fertility goddess. Perhaps originally Oriental, she is associated with Cyprus where she is said to have come ashore from the sea. In some myth she married Hephaestus, craftsman to the gods, In other myth she partnered Hermes, the ancient god of magical stone, a herald in human form.
