HISTORY OF THE HOTEL

On the night of March 1-2, 1815, a small detachment led by Emperor Napoleon I, who was in exile on the island of Elba, landed on French soil in the nearby town of Golfe-Juan.

Stories tell that the emperor stayed at the current Rue Bivouac Napoléon, while Pauline Bonaparte, his sister, spent the night at the small inn Gaziel, the forerunner of the hotel.

In December 1834, Lord Brougham opened Cannes.

Captivated by the charm of this town on the French Riviera, he decided to stay there in the company of his friends from the English nobility.

Cannes then became a very popular destination for the European aristocracy during the winter.

This is the beginning of a new era of prosperity in Cannes: the Belle Epoque.

In the winter of 1874, Jacques Offenbach, the famous operetta composer, was vacationing in Cannes. He stayed at the Splendid Hotel all winter.

1905 was a real turning point in the history of the hotel. Two floors have been added to give a majestic appearance to this noble building overlooking the Old Port of Cannes.

This is how the Splendid Hotel was born, at that time it was a seasonal hotel that opened only in winter, like all establishments in Cannes, which remained closed in the summer due to the heat.

Hoteliers and restaurateurs since 1889, the Caña family runs prestigious establishments in Moulin, Marseille, Paris, Grenoble, Sainte-Maxime, etc.

Bernard and Annick Cagna purchased Le Splendid in 1974 and have managed to maintain the charm and soul of this magnificent residence, the jewel in the crown of the Hôtellerie Cannoise. Their children and grandchildren perpetuate their work to this day.
