Description of the city and location:
Balchik is a city on the coast, in the north-east of Bulgaria, 47 km from the city of Varna and not far from the resort of Albena. It is the third most important port in Bulgaria after Burgas and Varna.
Within walking distance, 15 minutes by the sea or 3-5 minutes by car, the richest infrastructure of the famous Albena resort: aqua Park, playgrounds, shopping centers and shops, cafes, restaurants, spa services, beaches and discos. Also near Balchik you will find a golf course, a mussel farm, a winery.
A 20-minute drive away is a large aqua center and many pools with hot thermal water in the resort of St.tantin and Elena.
Very close to Balchik is the Tuzlata spa resort with therapeutic mud and hydrogen sulfide springs.
The distance to Varna Airport is 40 km.
Sights of Balchik:
The palace "Quiet Nest" and the Botanical Garden. The palace was built by order of the Queen of Romania, Maria of Edinburgh in 1924-1931 as a summer residence, with a huge park. On the territory of the residence there is a chapel and 10 villas, and the heart of the complex is the Queen's palace, which has a large tower. There is a stone throne near the palace, on which the queen liked to watch the sunrise. The palace park, with an area of 65 km2, is made in the manner of imitation of the Cretan labyrinth, the design of the park was developed by the Swiss gardener Jules Jani. In the park, which is now the Balchik Botanical Garden, there are more than 200 species of various tree species, many flowers, and the collection of cacti is the second in number (more than 250 species) after the collection in Monaco.
Recently, in 2007, a sensational archaeological discovery took place in Balchik - while digging a pit for construction, a well-preserved temple to the Phrygian Goddess of fertility Cybele, built in 280-260 BC, was discovered.
