Shared between different abbeys and a seigneury in the Middle Ages, the territory developed over the centuries, notably with the creation of the Medici aqueduct in the 17th century. The city became a major industrial center in the 19th century, particularly in the laundry and tanning industry on the banks of the Bièvre. Today, focused on the tertiary sector, Gentilly is known for its involvement in the audiovisual field.
