From the 18th to the middle of the 19th century, Berlin's customs and excise walls once stood here. The wall served to monitor trade: at the customs gates, an excise tax was levied on imported goods, the so-called excise duty. Today, these gates again give the street its name (Tor means 'gate' in English). The historical contrasts can still be felt today: on the one hand, the eastern part of the street has an original and rough flair, and on the west side, the street takes on a more dignified atmosphere. The range of dining, retail and culture is just as diverse. The Spree River with Monbijoupark and Friedrichstadtpalast are just a stone's throw away as well as the government district and the famous Friedrichstrasse.
