Berlin May Hold a Referendum on the Nationalization of Housing

Rents in the German capital have soared in recent years, doubling in the last decade alone. Locals do not intend to tolerate this. First, they convinced the city authorities to "freeze" the rent at the level of 2019. However, this decision was overturned in April by the German Federal Court, which declared these measures unconstitutional. And now activists have made an attempt to nationalize thousands of private apartments, writes Business Insider.

The campaigners want the government to take away more than 3,000 apartments from real estate companies in Berlin, make them state-owned and rent them out at more affordable prices. According to CityMonitor, the estimated market value of the property in question is up to €36 billion. However, the tenants are offering compensation in the amount of only €8 billion, claiming that the prices are inflated in a speculative way.

A petition for a referendum on the nationalization of housing in Berlin was launched in February. So far, it has already collected 130,000 signatures. This means that there is a real possibility that the authorities of the capital will be forced to hold a general vote in September.

The activist group intends to collect 240,000 signatures by the end of June, which will be enough to hold a referendum. A survey conducted in April showed that 47% of Berlin residents supported the proposal, 43% opposed it, and 9% were undecided.

Even if the referendum is successful, the plan of the outraged tenants will be difficult to translate into law. After all, the only party that supported the initiative is the "left", which has only 69 seats out of 709 in the German parliament. And the dominant Conservative parties were quick to condemn the proposed measures.
