Berlin residents supported the idea of nationalization of housing in a referendum on the relevant issue, which took place on September 26, 2021. After counting 100% of the ballots, the results showed that 56.4% voted positively and only 39% voted "against".
Activists began celebrating the victory on the same day, when a clear advantage was shown by counting only 27% of ballots.
Quote. "This is just preliminary data, we won't get final results until tomorrow! But even this number shows that Berliners are tired of speculation and insane rents," the movement for the expropriation of Berlin housing corporations said on Twitter.
Now, according to the results of the referendum, the Berlin Senate will have to develop a law allowing the withdrawal of housing from real estate companies. According to the initiative, these companies will be compensated for real estate at a rate "significantly below the market".
The vote was held after the German Constitutional Court abolished the maximum rent imposed in the German capital by the ruling left-wing coalition. Housing prices and rental rates have become a serious problem for Berlin residents.
