Costa Rica has finally approved a visa for digital nomads. Foreign remote workers and their family members can apply for a visa and stay in Costa Rica for up to two years (including a one-year visa, plus a one-year extension).
Back in 2021, the President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, signed a law allowing travelers to stay in the country for up to a year with the possibility of an extension for another year. However, the program encountered some problems, which led to a delay in its approval until July 2022.
Quote. "Costa Rica has ample opportunities for digital nomads. Our first step is to talk about the benefits of this new law, primarily in the United States. According to our reports, 50% of digital nomads worldwide live in the United States, with which we have close relations, geographical proximity, similar time zones and good air links," says Carolina Trejos, marketing director of the Costa Rica Tourism Board.
Trejos added that the site VisitCostaRica.com will be updated soon with a new section that will outline everything remote workers need to know about the requirements and benefits of the recently adopted law.
Conditions. Visa applicants must provide proof of a minimum income of $3,000 per month if they come alone, or a minimum of $4,000 if they come with a family member. Applicants must also show proof of having health insurance that will cover their time in Costa Rica.
Those who are in Costa Rica on a digital nomad visa will be banned from working in Costa Rican companies. On the other hand, holders of such a visa will be completely exempt from income tax on income received from other countries. The application documents must be completed and submitted in Spanish.
