Digital Nomads Have Turned Their Attention to Greece

According to the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum, digital nomads have dropped 2,918 applications for a Greek visa to date. 1,693 applications have already been approved, and 1,225 remain under consideration.
The Government's efforts to attract remote workers have begun to bear fruit. In particular, the Greek authorities have introduced a special visa for digital nomads and approved special tax benefits.
Digital nomads are high-income workers: one in six reportedly earns more than $75,000 a year. Almost 4 million people worldwide belong to the category of digital nomads, and, according to forecasts, by 2035 their number will grow to one billion. According to a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, if Greece manages to attract 100,000 digital nomads, then the annual inflow to the country's budget will be about €1.6 billion.
As noted by the Deputy Governor of Bank of Greece Theodore Pelagidis, now is the best time for the country to attract digital nomads. "About 80% of Europeans want to live outside of where they work, while about a third of German and French employees will work remotely in 2022. And this is a great opportunity for Greece."
"Anyone applying for a digital nomad visa will have to prove that they have at least €3,500 per month and appropriate job guarantees. Moreover, their employers must be abroad to prove there will be no right to compete with the Greeks for the local labor market," said Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis.
The digital nomads visa will be issued for a period of 12 months. Applicants need to work remotely with employers or clients outside of Greece. In addition to other supporting documents, the applicant must provide evidence that they have sufficient funds and a stable income to cover living expenses in the country without resorting to social benefits.
The new legislation allows third-country nationals to bring family members with them, but the latter will not be allowed to work in Greece. In this case, the required minimum income is plus 20% for the spouse and 15% for each child.
If at the end of the year all the required conditions are maintained, the applicant has the right to apply for a two-year residence permit.
