Shanghai led in the rating of the most expensive cities in the world in 2020. It left behind Tokyo and moved Hong Kong, the former leader, to third place. These are the data of the report of the banking company Julius Baer Group Ltd. on global welfare. At the same time, prices in the United States were the most affordable after the lockdown and the fall of the dollar, writes Bloomberg.
Shanghai became the most expensive city, as prices increased by 6% in 2020, while in Hong Kong they barely changed. Shanghai is described as an anomalous market: business class air tickets have risen in price by 82 %, and prices for hotel rooms have grown by 15%.
Among the regions of the world, the company named Asia as the most expensive one. The reasons for the success of the eastern countries was the rapid economic recovery after the pandemic. The report claims that in rich Asian countries COVID-19 has not turned into an epidemic in a matter of a month, unlike it happened the United States and Europe.
The report analyzes the consumer price index for 20 luxury goods popular among wealthy people in 25 cities of the world. The fashion trend for a healthy lifestyle in recent years has been spreading around the world, so the authors of the 2021 study have replaced some evaluation criteria. Personal trainers, wedding banquets, cosmetic procedures and musical instruments have been replaced by bicycles, treadmills, medical insurance and appliances. Monaco, Taipei, Zurich, Paris, London, Singapore and New York City are also named among the most affluent cities.
The coronavirus has made the wealthy ones even richer. The conditions were especially favorable for the technology industry, because the whole world has moved to online. People began to use the Internet for almost any purpose, from training to shopping and communication. However, the global increase in prices for a luxury lifestyle was only 1%, as the rich began to increasingly turn to conscious consumption. Experts believe that this trend will lead goods production to fairer pricing.
