France to Ban Short-Term Rental Housing With Bad Insulation

The rules will come into force on January 1, 2023.
France will block the housing with poor thermal insulation on short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb, said Olivier Klein, junior Minister of Housing and Cities of France.
Details. From January 1, 2023, when the norms of the climate law come into force in the country, landlords will no longer have the right to rent out the most poorly insulated apartments and houses for short-term rent referred to in French as "thermal colanders". The government wants to ensure that real estate marked with the letter G for energy efficiency diagnostics will not enter the short-term rental market.
Context. France's climate law targets poorly insulated housing because it leads to increased energy consumption when residents try to heat the room. By 2034, all apartments and houses with poor thermal insulation — marked E, F and G — will be gradually excluded from the long-term rental market.
Quote. "There can be no question of allowing a ban on long-term rental [of such housing] to be covered by turning residences into furnished tourist facilities. We need to work by the same rules," Junior Minister Olivier Klein told BFMTV.
What else? Klein also hinted that the government would consider the financial benefits associated with renting tourist accommodation: "There should be more fairness in the financial relations that arise with furnished tourist housing compared to classic non-tourist furnished housing. We are working on it."
