What has happened? In 2022 Germany has recorded the highest annual number of naturalizations in the last 20 years: 168.545 more people became officially German. This figure is also 28% higher than in 2021.
Where do these people come from? People of 171 nationalities have successfully applied for German citizenship in 2022. Most of these applicants (29%) were from Syria, followed by citizens of Ukraine, Iraq and Turkey.
Perspectives. The number of people applying for German citizenship is expected to continue to grow in the near future as many Syrian citizens who came to Germany as refugees in 2015 are approaching their eight-year mark of having lived in the country.
Currently, people holding a non-EU passport and applying for German citizenship must renounce their original citizenship, as dual German citizenship is generally prohibited. But as this, along with many other aspects of German citizenship law, is likely to be reformed soon, the number of applications for a German passport is expected to increase.
The new law will allow non-EU citizens to have dual citizenship with their new German passport. These reforms also mean that foreign residents living in Germany will be able to apply for citizenship after five years rather than eight. In circumstances where exceptional integration is proven, some people will be able to apply for a German passport after just three years.
