Another municipality has been added to the extensive list of towns that offer houses for one euro in Sicily. However, this time we are not talking about a small village with several inhabitants, but about a real Italian pearl, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List – Caltagirone in the province of Catania.
"We came to the point of promoting the initiative of houses for one euro in Caltagirone, having read that other Sicilian villages have done so. We are not so small and can count on almost 40,000 inhabitants, our historical center is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List," says Antonio Montemagno, adviser of the municipal heritage of Caltagirone.
The main goal of the municipality, in addition to encouraging re-settlement, is the safety of the historical center, since "many residents chose to leave their homes in the historical center in order to build new ones nearby," says Montemagno.
Many houses in the central areas have actually been inherited, and in many cases the heirs live outside of Caltagirone. They are not interested in spending money on repairs, seeing this as an additional burden due to taxes and expenses.
According to Montemagno, "in the event of a collapse, the owners of these houses bear civil and criminal responsibility, and because of the way these buildings are arranged, if one of them fails, it poses a danger to the entire center".
Hence the idea of the authorities to act as an intermediary when selling houses for one euro, giving owners the opportunity to remove unnecessary burdens and avoid spending money on an assets they are not interested in. At the same time, potential buyers can get a house in Caltagirone for a symbolic amount, assuming the obligation to secure the property within three years from the date of purchase.
There are no special restrictions, the buyer can use the property for residential, commercial or rental use.
