According to sources from Ekathimerini, the Greek government is considering measures to address the serious issue of a lack of affordable housing in cities. However, these measures do not involve radical actions against short-term rentals.
The plans are expected to be finalized in the next few days and possibly announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Thessaloniki International Fair, on September 7-15.
The Greek government aims to free up more housing without imposing stringent regulations on the profitable short-term rental market. Insiders suggest that any changes in this sector will be moderate.
Setting a ceiling on the number of properties a single owner can lease short-term
The requirement that the owners of two or more units set up a business through which to carry out their activities.
Setting up limits on the number of days such units can be leased to short-term tenants, such as 60 days on the islands.
Providing incentives for property owners to switch from short-term to long-term rentals, such as a discount on the tax on rent revenues.
