Work in the Czech Republic: How to Find a Job in Czechia and How Much You Can You Earn

  • 63
The Czech Republic is one of the most popular destinations for those wishing to find work abroad. At the same time, it has the lowest unemployment rate in the European Union, so the economy needs help of migrants. The only question is how to get the desired place in the Czech Republic? Read on to find out.

Are we needed in the Czech Republic?

As of early 2020, about 600 thousand foreigners lived in the country on a permanent basis. The largest group consists of Ukrainians: more than 145 thousand, or about a quarter of all visitors. In the second place are Slovaks, who lived with Czechs in the same country not so long ago. The Russians occupy the fourth line: there are 38 thousand of them.
Many EU citizens work in the Czech Republic as well, but most of them do not plan to stay here for a long time. In contrast to them, immigrants from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova, seek to settle in the Czech Republic. Currently, 60% of them live in the country on a permanent basis. Every eighth worker in the country is a foreigner, and their number is likely to grow.

Indeed, at the beginning of 2020, the number of job vacancies in the country was one and a half times higher than the number of the unemployed! Most of the vacancies were in Prague, and technical specialists were in most demand. The personnel shortage is estimated at 300-400 thousand people.

How can a foreigner find a job in the Czech Republic?

1. The Internet. You can search for job positions in the Czech Republic yourself on the following websites:

  • uradprace.cz –an official website of the Czech Ministry of Labor. The portal searches all Czech employment markets, and the vacancies revealed assume the possibility of employing a foreigner.
  • 420on.cz – a popular Czech portal; jobs that are listed here are offered in different areas; announcements  are in Russian (for industrial work positions) or English (in the field of programming, finance, management, etc.).
  • upcr.cz – vacancies of Czech employment offices.

There are a lot of job hunting websites in the country, but these are some of the largest, where, in addition to finding a job according to the given conditions, you can find useful information (how to write a CV, a motivation letter, how to prepare for an interview, etc.).

Czech message boards / sites (you need either knowledge of the language, or for the first time - the ability to use Google Translate):

In Czech:

2. Recruitment agency. It is one of the easiest ways to find a job in the Czech Republic, which does not require your time and knowledge of the language. The only thing you need to pay attention to here is the selection of a reliable and necessary agency. Therefore, first of all please study the website: the way of presenting information, the main offered job positions, terms of cooperation. Presence of a special license issued by local authorities is obligatory.

The most famous agencies:

Choose several options and call them, ask questions about work, find out the conditions, and also observe how employees communicate with you. Be sure to ask what is included in the range of their services, what guarantees are provided, how to pay  for the assistance provided.

3. Social networks. You can also search for vacancies in social networks. There are popular groups where employers post their ads. For example: Jobs for foreigners in the Czech Republic

On the other hand, many recruitment  agencies and large employers also run their own social media groups and post their job offers there. They can be found by searching within the social network.

4. Labor registry office. The  things are more complicated here, because either Czechs or foreigners with a residence permit, refugee status or EU citizens can apply to local labor registry offices. If you do not meet any of these conditions, you will need a work or residence permit.

In order to get to the database of a Czech labour registry office, you need to provide:

  • an employment mediation application (available on the website of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs)Ministry of Labour and Social
  • documents proving identity, citizenship and registration;
  • certificate of termination of individual entrepreneurship or suspension of labor relations;
  • qualification document (diplomas, certificates, etc.) ;
  • if you have children – their birth certificates;
  • persons with special needs - a corresponding certificate.

After registering with the labour registry office, you are provided with social and health insurance by the state for the period while you are looking for a suitable job.

Most of the vacancies are concentrated in the Czech capital city, and many are not publicly available. Therefore, in addition to the above methods, be active: use the appropriate groups in social networks, write to employers directly. Pay attention to the websites of large local companies - Škoda, Agrofert, Zentiva, Unipetrol, Pilsner Urquell, CEZ group. Go to the Czech Republic to relax and visit the selected recruiting agencies on the spot, look through the ads in the local print media.

Requirements for foreign workers

Please pay attention to the following issues to successfully find a job in the Czech Republic.

Language

For highly qualified specialties, this requirement is mandatory, for vacancies without special knowledge, it is desirable. At least at a minimal conversational level. English and, to a lesser extent, German (it is spoken by about 1% of the country) will not be unnecessary.

Education

Any diploma must be confirmed and translated into Czech.

Competition

The Czech Republic has the lowest unemployment rate among all EU countries: at the beginning of 2020 it was only 2.0%. But first of all, the country is interested in the employment of its own citizens.

The Scheme of Employment of Foreigners in the Czech Republic

Despite the low unemployment rate and the abundance of vacancies, Czech law protects its citizens and gives them priority in employment, therefore:

1. The employer contacts the local office of the employment department, informs about the availability and characteristics of the vacancy. It will be included in the general database and published. If within a month neither the Czechs nor other EU citizens are interested in the offer, it is allowed to hire third-country nationals.

2. A foreigner applies for a vacancy and receives a work permit for up to two years.

How a foreigner can obtain a work permit in the Czech Republic

There are several types of documents in force in the country that legalize labor activity. This can be a general work permit (Povolení k zaměstnání), as well as a Labor card (Zaměstnanecká karta) or an EU Blue Card (in the Czech Republic it is called Modrá karta).

Stage 1. Draw up and sign an agreement with the employer.

Stage 2. Submit an application for a card of the required type, having studied the list of documents and nuances on the website of the Czech Ministry of Labor.

What's the difference between the cards? The Labor card is issued to those who get a job without higher education, while the wage level should be at least the minimum, and work engagement should be at least 15 hours per week. EU Blue Card is issued to employees with a higher or specialized education (training period - at least 3 years), and only in demanded professions. Both cards  allow you to live and work in the country for the duration of the contract. Both are valid for no more than 2 years. If all the requirements are met, the EU Blue Card  is often issued faster, and is also valid for another 3 months after the end of the contract.

Labor card and EU Blue Card are more "high-grade" alternatives to a work permit, which obliges you to additionally obtain a residence permit for the purpose of employment.

Stage 3. The next step is to obtain a work visa. Documents are submitted for a long-term visa type D. In order to apply, you need to contact the consular department of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in your country (there you will also find a list of necessary papers). The term of consideration is no more than 3 months.

Stage 4. After receiving a permit or card, as well as your visa, you come to the country to work. Within 60 days you will need to receive a residence permit card, and, if desired, - permanent residence after 5 years.

Job positions in demand

After monitoring job sites and Czech message boards, you will understand which specialists are most needed in the Czech Republic.

  • High-skilled workers. Engineers, doctors, IT workers (programmers, designers, testers, project managers, etc.) are in demand - their salaries grow  most rapidly in the country. Active spheres in the Czech Republic are accounting and finance, customer service, administrative staff. In addition to knowledge of Czech, which is implied almost everywhere, employees with knowledge of English, German and other languages are in demand here.

There is a shortage of people in the country with professional knowledge in the above areas, since many locals move to other European countries with higher salaries. This is especially true for doctors. The average age of a doctor in the Czech Republic is 52 years old, and when he has to retire, there is no one to replace him. Young Czech doctors quickly leave their home country to earn 2-3 times more in Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Great Britain. The Czech authorities have already realized that it is impossible to solve this problem without the participation of migrants, therefore it is proposed to launch a special program to attract medical personnel from abroad. At the beginning of 2020, the country lacked from 3000 to 5000 nurses, nannies, hospital attendants and social workers.

  • Work without special knowledge or manual labor. You can get a job as a cook, waiter, cleaner, operator or equipment adjuster, welder, foundry worker, consultant, truck driver, security guard, salesman. Moreover, the Czech Republic is in such a need of such workers that it is ready to accept young people without any experience who have graduated from a higher or specialized secondary educational institution.

Now about a third of foreign workers in the Czech Republic are employed in the manufacturing industry, least of all foreigners work in public administration.

Salaries in the Czech Republic

The average salary in the country in the first quarter of 2020 has exceeded 34 thousand Czech korunas(€ 1,300) - over the year it has increased by 5%. Average earnings in Prague were noticeably higher: almost 43 thousand Czech korunas (€ 1600). The minimum wage in the Czech Republic from January 1, 2020 is CZK 14,600 is  approximately € 560. The lowest average salary at the beginning of 2020 was recorded in the Pardubice region - 30,349 Czech korunas per month. IT and finance have become the leading spheres, it is also profitable to work in medicine and in engineering positions, and the lowest salaries are in the social sphere, culture and art.

Approximate average salaries by professions (per month):

  • IT-specialists – €2,500
  • Financier – €2,300
  • Energy worker – €2,200
  • Scientific and technical specialists – €1,500
  • Doctors – €3,500
  • Engineers (metallurgy, chemical industry, etc.) – €2,000
  • Teachers – €1,500
  • Wait staff – €700
  • Hotel and restaurant workers – €700-800
  • Maintenance, security guards, kitchen workers – €700
  • Builder / agricultural worker – €600-700
  • Hospital attendants, nurses – €1,500-2,000
  • Drivers – €700-1,400

In many working specialties salary rates are stated per hour, which is  on average about 100-150 Czech korunas (€ 4-6), depending on the position. For example, loaders, assemblers, and construction site laborers receive less. Welders, builders receive more. It is difficult to indicate the monthly salary here, since the total amount directly depends on the number of hours and the plan fulfilled. Often the employer provides the opportunity to overwork for money.

In such offers the employer often offers help with accomodation: a hostel will cost € 100-200 per month, depending on the city. There are offers with free accomodation, but then the salary rate is lower: around 90 Czech korunas (€ 3.5). If you plan to rent an apartment yourself, get ready to pay at least € 400 monthly for a one-room apartment in a residential area of the capital.

So, is it worth going to work in the Czech Republic? If you are a qualified specialist (doctor, engineer, programmer), feel free to start monitoring job hunting sites. You can count on high salaries and attractive conditions. It is also worth considering  for skilled workers (builders, welders, drivers, etc.) - although the working conditions for you in the Czech Republic are not so easy, but the salary is good. Only people without qualifications and experience can seriously doubt: you are unlikely to find a decent salary here.
