Moving to another country is a very serious decision that is not easy to make. There are plenty of options on the market, and some of them are more popular then others. Lots of people move to Romania for more affordable lifestyle (as oppose to Western Europe) and open borders. The country is especially welcoming towards people with Romanian roots. So, how to get the citizenship of this country?

Who can get Romanian citizenship

Any person who proves that he or she was born or lived in Romania before 1940 can apply for Romanian citizenship. Their children and grandchildren also have the right to apply for citizenship.

Before obtaining citizenship by restoration, it is important to consider the following steps.

Step 1. Submission of the documents

At this stage, some legal difficulties may arise. Among the most common are:

  • errors in the spelling of names and surnames;
  • missing documents;
  • change of surname as a result of marriage.

What documents will you need for the process?

Passports:

  • National (citizen) and foreign ones.

Certificates:

  • The birth certificate of you, your parents and children (if you have them). In the event of the death of the mother and/or father, a document confirming this is required;
  • The metric of third-generation relatives (grandparents) is also mandatory, given that they included those whose place of birth was located within the old borders of Romania;
  • Your marriage certificate, the certificate of your parents and third-generation relatives.

References:

  • The certificate of no criminal record.

In addition, a number of additional documents should also be prepared.

Applications:

  • The claim that obtaining the status of a citizen of Romania is being filed for the first time.

Declarations:

  • The compliance with the legal system of Romania (that you do not intend to commit actions that in one way or another contradict the Constitution of the country);
  • If your child has not reached the full age yet, the confirmation of the absence of claims must be submitted to give the child Romanian citizenship as well.

Step 2. Checking the client's data and analyzing the pedigree for the presence of ethnic ancestors.

Copies of all documents are sent to authorized institutions located on the territory of Bucharest, where the information about the client passes the required verification procedures. After that, the search for possible relatives with Romanian roots begins.

If the documents have been checked and suitable potential relatives have been found, then the documents are accepted for further consideration. Otherwise, you receive a refusal to restore citizenship.

Stage 3. Collecting the necessary documents and then submitting them to the competent institutions.

The package of required documents is translated into Romanian and legally certified, after which it is sent to the competent state authorities. Do not worry about the stay of documents in another country: You can also do it by proxy, which makes it easier to work with the papers and eliminates the need for constant travel to the country to solve possible difficulties.

During the next month, you receive a notification about taking an oath, which in fact is the utterance of a certain text in the presence of the Romanian consul.

Step 6. Getting the documents.

The final stage involves obtaining the necessary documents to become a full citizen of the European Union, namely:

  • two passports: domestic and foreign;
