The program will be suspended by December 31 this year.
The government of Montenegro will not prolong the current citizenship by investment program on the basis of which applicants could receive a Montenegrin passport. According to Vijesti, one of the main reasons for stopping the program due to being contrary to the interests of the EU.
"The promotion of such a program is contrary to the trends of revision of existing programs in the EU and critical analysis by the EU institutions, as well as the requirements for the abolition of similar programs in the member states," the government document says.
By the end of 2021, the government will decide whether to introduce a new program for obtaining Montenegrin citizenship, which does not automatically arise by birth and other criteria provided for by law. And those investors who want to have time to obtain citizenship of Montenegro under the current investment program will be able to do so until December 31, 2021.
The government wants the existing program to be changed into a state program in order to further promote the highly qualified personnel potential in the country, by identifying the sector of the economy that contributes to the development of the economic potential of Montenegro. In both cases, the government will clearly define the criteria, whether it will be limited to the need for the length of stay in Montenegro, as well as the tax obligations arising from obtaining the status of a Montenegrin citizen.
