In July, the Portuguese Border Service (SEF) issued 80 "golden visas" for the main applicants. The result of investments of €44 million have led to these permits. It is a sharp decrease compared to the €78 million received in June, but almost twice as much as in the same month last year.
General figures. Since the law came into force on October 8, 2012, Portugal's Golden Visa program has attracted a total of €6.46 billion. Since 2013, the scheme has brought an average of €1.67 million a day to the country's treasury for 10 consecutive years.
The current situation. In the first seven months of 2022, SEF approved 729 main applicants. This indicates that the volume of approved applications for 2022 should exceed last year's figure (865) by mid-September.
Nationalities. In July, Americans remained the main investors (11 approvals). Next are the Chinese (10), Brazilians (9), South Africans (7) and Turks (5).
Types of investments. The popularity of the investment fund option continues to grow dramatically. The share of applicants who chose this path of obtaining a "golden visa" doubled in the period from 2020 to 2021 and doubled again this year. Every fifth approved investor invested money in an investment fund this year, and 41% preferred to purchase real estate intended for reconstruction.
