Portuguese President Approves an Immigration Law

Portugal has reformed its immigration laws to attract foreign workers.

The President of Portugal has approved a new immigration law. According to the document, foreigners looking for work in Portugal are granted a 120-day visa, which can be extended for 60 days. The reform has just came into force. This step is also intended to make it easier for "digital nomads" to work from Portugal.

Quote. "Portugal needs immigrants for its demography, its economy and its culture," said Ana Catarina Mendes, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs of Portugal.

Context. The Iberian country's tourism sector has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and requires about 50,000 additional employees, says Rita Marquez, Minister of Tourism.

According to the last population census conducted in 2011, the number of foreigners living in Portugal has increased by 40% over the past decade.
