The Benefits of Being a Remote Worker

  • 2821
More and more countries offer new comfortable conditions for foreign digital nomads in hope to overcome the consequances of the situation in the world. Three more European destinations change the rules in favour of foreign remote workers.

Iceland

The new amendment to allow foreigners to stay in Iceland for a longer period of time was added by the government of Iceland. The employees that work remotely for foreign companies can now stay in Iceland for up to 6 months, reports Iceland Review.  Until now, it was possible to get a visa for a maximum of 90 days.

To obtain a long-term residence permit, you will need to prove that you have an employment contract with a foreign company, provide medical insurance, and confirm a high income. The applicant must earn at least 1 million Icelandic kronor per month, hich is about €6,032. But if you want to bring your spouse or partner, be ready to make 1.3 million Icelandic kronor (€7,842).

As stated by the Minister of Justice Áslaug Arna, rapid technological development requires modern society to be flexible and open to the opportunities that arise when more employers start to support remote work. The regulatory system needs to start taking it into consideration.

The Minister also said that those who come on this visa will not pay taxes in Iceland and therefore will not be able to count on social assistance. "It was decided to set the annual salary cap at $85,000, which is a common figure for a specialist working in a big city," Áslaug Arna wrote on her Twitter. At the same time, according to the state register of Iceland, the average income of specialists in 2019 was 745,000 Icelandic crowns ($5,244 or €4,494) per month.

The Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Bjarni Benediktsson added that the government needs to make sure that nothing prevents temporarily allowing people working for foreign companies to do so from Iceland in terms of taxation. They are confident that such employees can bring valuable experience and connections with them, which will benefit Iceland in its economic recovery from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

These are just the first steps towards making Iceland more attractive to foreigners working remotely. The authorities plan to increase the period of time for remote users to come to the country.

Serbia

Belgrade, Serbia

The Serbian Minister of Labor Zoran Djordjevic said that his country is going to give foreign citizens working remotely the opportunity to obtain a residence permit and work permit in Serbia for a period of one year. The new rules will take effect on January 1, 2021, writes Seanews.

"We want to become the first country in Europe that will allow those non-citizens who work for foreign companies to continue doing this work from Serbia," - Zoran Djordjevic has said in a press release.

Foreigners will have to prove that they earn more than €3,500 a month before taxes when employed by an employer located abroad. Those who want to live in Serbia will be able to get a residence permit and work permit in Serbia for a period of one year. According to the Minister of labor, Serbia will be able to increase its VAT revenues.
