Henley & Partners presented the results of the Passport Index for the third quarter of 2022, which are based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It turned out that passport holders (the leaders of the rating with the greatest visa-free access) are reluctant to use this freedom.
Leaders and outsiders. Japan ranks first in the Index in terms of the number of visa-free destinations (or with a visa on arrival) open to passport holders of this country - 193. Singapore and South Korea took second place with a result of 192 visa-free destinations.
Despite the unprecedented number of visa-free opportunities for holders of these passports in the entire 17-year history of the Index, international passenger demand in the Asia-Pacific region reached only 17% of the pre-pandemic level (it was below 10% during the pandemic), according to the latest IATA statistics. This figure lags behind the global trend – Europe and North America have recovered to about 60% of the pre-pandemic level.
The member states of the European Union (EU) prevail in the top ten of the rating - Germany and Spain occupy joint 3rd place with access to 190 destinations without visas. Afghanistan remains in last place, and its citizens have visa-free access to 27 countries.
