The Best Universities in the World in 2022

Experts have analyzed more than 1,600 universities from 99 countries.

The Times World University Ranking 2022 includes more than 1,600 universities in 99 countries around the world. The analysis is based on 13 indicators that measure the effectiveness of the institution in four areas such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international perspectives.

This year, analysts analyzed more than 108 million citations from more than 14.4 million scientific publications and took into account the responses to surveys of almost 22,000 scientists around the world.

There are a total of 1,662 universities in the ranking. Another 452 universities have also provided data, but did not meet the selection criteria.

The Top-10 universities in the world include:

  3. Harvard University (USA)
  4. Stanford University (USA)
  5. University of Cambridge (UK)
  6. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA)
  7. Princeton University (USA)
  8. The University of California, Berkeley (USA)
  9. Yale University (USA)
  10. University of Chicago (USA)

Detailes: 

  • For the first time in the history of the rating, two universities in mainland China entered the Top-20: Peking University and Tsinghua University share the 16th place.
  • The United States is the most represented country in the ranking with 183 educational institutions, and also forms the largest group in the Top-200 (57), although the share of American universities is decreasing.
  • Mainland China ranks fifth in the number of institutions in the Top-200 (compared to seventh last year), overtaking Canada and equaling the Netherlands.
  • Compared to last year, six new countries appeared in the table: Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Fiji, Palestine and Tanzania.
