The World Happiness Report is a global survey aimed to reveal how people evaluate their own lives worldwide. This year, the report has ranked 146 countries.
About the survey
Over the last ten years, there has been a transformation of public interest in happiness. It has become a worldwide trend to regard this variable as an important and an overarching objective.
The United Nations announced March 20-th to be the International Day of Happiness back in 2012. The World Happiness Report is now released every year around March 20-th as part of the International Day of Happiness celebration.
The report is released every year by the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
To determine the world's happiest country, the researchers use the data from the Gallup World Poll. The equations are estimated using about 1,000 respondents in each country.
The experts also evaluate such important categories as: gross domestic product per capita, the level of social support in times of need, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make your own life choices, generosity of the general population, and perceptions of corruption in business and government.
It is important to mention that this year’s report has also focused on how people are doing in the face of Covid-19 and how they estimate the future prospects.
The statisticians have monitored such acts of prosocial behavior as helping strangers, volunteering and donations — all showed significant increases in 2021 in every global region.
The important role of the research is also dedicated to the volume of people’s positive and negative emotions. And the good news here is that last year positive emotions as a whole remained more than twice as frequent as negative ones.
The top -10 happiest countries in the world 2022
Finland, which is on top of the chart for already several years in a row, has one of the best social safety nets in the world, high quality education system, low level of poverty. The people of this nation have a very good lifestyle balance, which allows people to devote enough time to their personal needs and curiosities.
Denmark has the second position in the list. According to the report, the citizens of this Scandinavian country are exceptionally satisfied with their lives. Among the main reasons for this trend are: stable government, free education and health care, and respect for human rights.
Iceland rates the third among the leaders. The people in this country are happy with the high standard of living, free high-quality education and low unemployment rates.
Switzerland with its fourth position has always been among the leaders of happy nations due to the high GDP per capita, social support, and low corruption levels.
The Netherlands have obtained the fifth spot in the chart. The residents of this country are happy with good lifestyle balance, high-quality education and high disposable income.
Luxembourg has the sixth position. This small country is multicultural; nearly half of its residents have a foreign nationality. It is easy to understand the optimism of its residents when it comes to high GDP and high life expectancy, stable social support.
Sweden has lost one point this year and has moved to number seven. The residents are satisfied with social support, high life expectancy, and freedom to make life choices. The variety of its natural resources explains why this destination is consistently at the top of the chart.
Norway has the eighth position in the list. Norwegians do not have much to complain about with a high GDP per capita in the country, strong health care system, and promising education opportunities.
Israel has climbed 3 points up this year to the ninth position. The main reasons are its residents' strong sense of community, freedom to make life choices, and high life expectancy.
New Zealand has moved one point down, but still managed to enter the top-10 happy countries. This country has vivid natural attractions and high quality of life. The residents are happy with its good work-life balance and nice climate that allows people to spend enough time in nature. The country also had one of the lowest rates of COVID-19 infections and deaths in the world last year, which contributed to the level of institutional trust.

France has gained the 20-th position in the chart and this is the best ranking France has reached since the study was created.
Russia ranked 80-th and did worse than last year when it had the 60-th position in the chart.
Ukraine turned out to be 98-th and this result was better when compared to the previous year (100-th).
Belarus rates 65-th and has performed a bit better than in 2021 (75-th).
Kazakhstan has the 40-th position this year, presenting slight improvement from last year’s 45-th position.
There were no significant changes in popular European destinations in comparison with the previous report except for Greece – 58 (ten points up) and, Turkey – 112 (eight points down).
Bulgaria – 88 ( 2 points up) , Germany – 14 (1 point down), Czech Republic – 18 (no changes), Spain – 29 ( two points down), Turkey – 112 (eight points down), France – 20 (one point up) , Italy – 31(3 points down).
It is also worth mentioning that the steepest gains in "happy moods” since the early days of the research occurred in Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Togo, Bahrain, Latvia, Benin, Guinea, and Armenia.
Afghanistan ranks as the unhappiest country of the world and suffers from high levels of violence and extreme poverty. The rate of happiness has been just 2.5 out of 10 here.
For the last two years, Lebanon has been dealing with a number of crises. 2020 brought COVID-19 economic crisis and on August 4-th, 2020, a massive ammonium nitrate explosion has ruined the country’s capital city, Beirut.
With a regional score of 4.5, Africa ranks as the unhappiest region worldwide. Zimbabwe remains the most unhappy country in the region.
It is worth mentioning most people in the countries at the bottom of the chart are living below the international poverty line.
The pandemic has made people a bit nicer and caring
The pandemic has changed a lot in life perceptions worldwide. The researchers found during 2021 remarkable worldwide growth in all three acts of kindness monitored in the Gallup World Poll. Helping strangers, volunteering, and donations in 2021 were strongly up in every part of the world, reaching levels almost 25% above their pre-pandemic prevalence.
People seemed to have calmed down a bit throughout 2021 and there was much less worry, sadness and anger.
There was much less smiling and laughing during the pandemic. On the other hand, the desire to learn something new has risen due to lockdowns and obtaining new hobbies.
The nations all around the world are looking for freedom to make their own choices and seek governmental trust.
The crisis has influenced people’s life perceptions a lot: there were a lot of anger and worries. However, according to the data, there was an upgrade of the people’s decency and the ability to take care of one another.
The information, presented in the research, may help countries to create policies aimed at achieving happier societies.
