The Ranking of the Capitals of Europe to Live a Long and Healthy Life
September 18, 2020
14
British scientists have found in which cities the chances of a long and healthy life are significantly high.
Analysts of the British online clinic Treated.com have found out which of the 46 European capitals are the best for a healthy life. Each city was evaluated according to ten criteria, including the overall quality of life, the cost of vegetables and fruits, and the percentage of the country's GDP allocated to health care. The analysis is based on data from sources such as Numbeo, HPI ThinkTank, World Population Review, World Bank Group and Index Mundi.
Evaluation Factors
The cost of a monthly subscription to the gym
Life expectancy
Air quality
Water quality
Overall quality of life
Percentage of GDP allocated to healthcare
Cost of five fruits or vegetables
Level of carbon dioxide emissions
Percentage of residents who go to work on foot or by bicycle
State of green areas
Leaders
Copenhagen leads the overall standings. The average life expectancy in the city is 81 years. A big role in this is played by high performance in all of the above aspects. So, sports are more affordable here than in many other capitals: a monthly subscription to the gym costs £22.95. In terms of overall quality of life, Copenhagen is second only to Bern in Switzerland. In terms of the number of people commuting to work on foot or by bike, the capital of Denmark is also in second place, right behind Amsterdam. Copenhagen has another silver medal in the category of carbon dioxide emissions, there are fewer of them only in Podgorica.
There is good quality of air, water (third place among all others) and green areas. But the cost of vegetables and fruits is high: you need to pay £10.50 for five units. For example, in Pristina, Belgrade, Yerevan, Tbilisi and Baku this figure does not exceed £4. But health care costs in the Danish city are among the highest. About 10.35% of GDP is allocated for this.
Vienna gets silver and stands slightly behind Copenhagen. The average life expectancy here is even higher – 81.5 years. According to other indicators, the city also occupies high positions in air quality, water quality, the general standard of living and green spaces. Many locals walk or bike to work. In general, they love sports and it is also affordable here, although slightly more expensive than in Copenhagen - about £24.36 per month. They spend a lot on healthcare, 10.44% of the total GDP.
The top three is closed by Bern with the highest standard of living and its life expectancy rate duration - up to almost 84 years. But there are the most expensive gym passes (£60.53) and the second most expensive fruit and vegetable basket (£13.31). However, judging by how much people earn in Switzerland, these figures do not bother them. In the Swiss capital, the largest percentage of GDP is allocated to healthcare – 12.25%.
Helsinki and Berlin accompany leaders in the top 5. They are united by the fact that citizens live longer than 81 years and that there are good recreational areas. In some other parameters, the capitals are also similar, both have expensive fruits and vegetables, approximately the same cost of training in a fitness club and relatively low carbon dioxide emissions. But there are also significant differences. Thus, the quality of air and water is much higher in Helsinki, as well as the standard of living in general. However, Germans are noticeably more likely to ride bicycles or walk to work. In addition, the German capital has a higher percentage of GDP allocated to healthcare!
By the way
The presence of two Northern capitals in the top-5 is not surprising: Scandinavian cities are considered to be the greenest and safest places, and their residents are among the happiest people in the world.

At the end of the rating are cities where good conditions for a long and healthy life have not yet been created.
Despite the availability of sports passes and fruits and vegetables, Ankara shows poor results in all other indicators. The city has poor quality of water, lack of green areas and air. The latter is affected by a large gas pollution. The Turkish capital is the third in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. The citizens do not help to solve the problem: the proportion of people who get to work on foot or by bicycle in Ankara is less than in other capitals. The authorities allocate only 4.31% of GDP to healthcare, while Turks themselves live here for an average of 77.5 years.
The situation in Rome is even worse. Poor water and air, high carbon dioxide emissions, low percentage of people who give up cars in favor of walking or cycling... And a "bonus": it turns out, that subscriptions to sports clubs in Rome are very expensive. The situation is slightly better with the quality of parks and alleys, the health sector, and the cost of fruits and vegetables, but even with these indicators the city is far behind the leaders of the rating. The paradox is that, despite all of the above, the Italian capital is home to centenarians, that is why Rome is in third place with an average life expectancy of almost 83.5 years.
The population of Bucharest was lucky only with the cost of a basket of fruits and vegetables. A daily serving costs an average of £4.31. Everything else does not add to the local health or age. By the way, people live in the Romanian capital on average a little less than 76 years. This is not surprising, because the water and air here are not of the best quality, there is little greenery, and only 16% of the population prefers to travel on foot or by bicycle, but mostly they drive cars. Well, less than 5% of GDP is allocated to the health system itself.
The Russian capital is in the penultimate place in the rating. According to the data, it is expensive to play sports in Moscow (£35.45) and not very cheap to buy fruits and vegetables (£5.71). Analysts also note that the city has a large gas pollution, little green space, a low percentage of people who refuse cars and poor-quality water. Muscovites live in such conditions for less than 73 years on average.
Baku closes the rating. Perhaps the only advantage of the capital of Azerbaijan is the cost of vegetables and fruits. People spend no more than £3.84 a day on them, but it costs at least £28.82 a month to keep fit. As for the rest, the overall standard of living in the city is almost the lowest.
By the way
Some countries shared their places in the ranking. For example, Reykjavik and Madrid together ranked 17th, Sofia and Warsaw 27th, Sarajevo and Luxembourg 30th, and Skopje with Athens are 34th.
The representative of Treated.com Dr. Daniel Atkinson, commenting on the results of the report, noted that the above affects not only physical well-being, but also psychological health. So, good green areas enrich the city with oxygen and promote sports in such places. People themselves notice that parks and woodlands increase their happiness and well–being. This is how 90% of respondents answered.
Note that information about other cities included in the rating can be found in the source.
