Located in about an hour’s drive from Dubrovnik, the Kotor bay, is a UNESCO site located on the territory of Montenegro. The Bay of Kotor itself has been a beacon of inspiration for generations of artists and poets – now the region is becoming internationally recognized as one of Montenegro’s principal attractions and cultural treasures.

Perast is a very small town but it’s not the size that makes this place so special. Located in the Bay of Kotor, this town looks like if it was pictured by a landscape artist and put there like an illustration. Surrounded by mountains and reflected in the waters of the bay, Perast is truly amazing. The town acquired its present urban plan and architectural appearance during the prosperous years of the 17th and 18th centuries. Although damaged by a long period of economic stagnation, the construction of a coastal road and various incursions on old towers and palaces, Perast today represents one of the most beautiful examples of baroque architecture on the Adriatic coast.

Probably the most distinctive landmarks of Perast are the two magical islands situated between the Verige strait and the town. No traveler to Montenegro should pass by an opportunity to see the nearby island of Our Lady of the Rocks! In 1452 two sailors from Perast happened by a small rock jutting out of the bay after a long day at sea and discovered a picture of the Virgin Mary perched upon the stone. Around the legendary stone, citizens of Perast began to sink old ships and transported stones to the site for over 200 years, creating the Adriatic Sea's only artificial island where they subsequently built the chapel of Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Skrpjela) in 1630.

Perast is a town of some 400 permanent inhabitants, but it boasts seventeen Catholic churches and two Orthodox churches mostly from the Baroque period.

Perast was a joyful stopping spot for the Russian Czars and Venetian Princes who for hundreds of years have frequented Kotor Bay to hone their sailing skills under the watchful gaze of abundant natural beauty, and today enjoys the worldly distinction as an important protected UNESCO world heritage site.
