The modern architecture of Italy is also very impressive. The most striking example is the residential complex Bosco Verticale in the Porta Nuova district of Milan. The complex has two towers, one is about 110 meters, and the other – 76. meters. Each floor is surrounded by terraces with planted trees (about 900), shrubs (5 thousand) and perennial creeping plants (more than 11 thousand).
This is not just a beautiful project, but also an attempt to populate the city's flora and fauna, which is the basis of a concept created by the architects Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra. According to their forecasts, the vertically directed environment created by planted plants can be populated by different species of birds and insects, including butterflies.
In addition, the vertical forest creates a unique microclimate both in the apartments and in the area as a whole: it increases humidity, absorbs carbon dioxide, and protects people from solar radiation and noise pollution. And of course, it produces oxygen and filters dust.
The towers were commissioned in 2014 (five years after the start of construction), at the same time they were recognized as the best skyscrapers of the year (talking about the International Highrise Award from the Frankfurt Museum of Architecture). A year later, the residential complex turned out to be the best skyscraper in Europe according to the Council on High-Rise Buildings and Urban Environment (CTBUH).
Single pensioners unite for cohabitation
Italian pensioners are an example of active old age. They like to relax, meet in restaurants and bars, travel around the world. Most can afford such a pastime in retirement – in particular, those who have two apartments, one of which is rented.
However, not everyone lives this way. More than 3.5 million Italian nonni (the so-called grandparents) live alone. And in houses that they can't support after the economic crisis. They have created a new phenomenon called 'silver cohousing'. The word silver here is a reference to gray hair.
Cohabitation helps not just to share the costs of a house and communal services, but also to find a partner, and maybe a friend.
The phenomenon is more than relevant, if you collect all the factors that influenced it.
Optimize the use of urban real estate built in the last century. So, in the buildings of the post-war period, there are many residential premises with an average area of 90-100 sq.m. They are often occupied by one person, while there is enough space for three: it is considered that the necessary space for one person is 30 sq.m.
More efficient distribution of social assistance. The concentration of elderly people who need care in one place allows social and medical services staff to provide assistance to several people at once.
The cohabitation model makes it possible to reduce the number of hospitalizations of pensioners whose condition is described as 'non-acute'. Such a patient, as a rule, can be helped by a neighbor. And reducing the cost of hospitalization allows you to direct money to other tasks.
With the release of 5 or 10% of real estate assets, from 100 to 200 thousand housing units will appear on the market. This, in turn, will help expand the social housing program.
Italy has the second largest number of elevators after China
But the country lost it's superiority only in 2013, before that the Italians were in the lead. Now more than 900 thousand elevator systems are installed in all the houses of the country (on average, one per 62 people). In Europe, there are no competitors for this indicator.
Most lifts are in Lombardy (more than 80 thousand buildings with at least one elevator), Liguria (one elevator for 70 people), Piedmont (106) and Abruzzo (109).
In addition to the fact that the Italian elevator park is the largest in Europe, it is also the oldest: about 40% of the operating systems are older than 30 years, and more than 60% are not equipped with modern technologies.
Often several generations live under the same roof
Italians are family oriented people. Youngsters here are considered to be people up to 30 years old, and in some cases even up to 40. Until then, it is absolutely not a shame to live with parents and nonnis under the same roof.
When the youngsters manage to separate themselves from the parents, they move in with friends in order to save money. Such cohabitation can be found equally often among both 18-25-year-olds and more adult people.
No hallways in Italian homes
The presence of hallways in apartments and houses is atypical. The most familiar layout is when entering from the street, a person immediately gets into a large living room. Sometimes it is even combined with the kitchen.
In this common space, there are often small sofas or armchairs to accommodate guests, as well as small coffee tables. The top things (which are already few) are left either in the built-in closet, or just on a free-standing hanger. Shoes-in the same place. But in many homes, it is not customary to take off your shoes: the streets are clean and dry most of the year, otherwise the tiled floor is easy to clean.
It is worth noting that in new homes, the hallway is still trying to visually separate from other rooms. However, it still remains small, there is only room for a small stand for keys and documents, as well as a compact wardrobe for clothes, or even just hooks on the wall.
The bathroom must have a window
An Italian bathroom without a window is a rare phenomenon. This can only be found in cheap apartments or hotels.
The window can be quite small and even tightly curtained, but according to the Italians, it is necessary. An apartment with a bathroom without natural light is more difficult to sell.
