The Portuguese Parliament has approved changes to the country's citizenship law that will allow residents to begin counting the required five years to obtain citizenship from the date of application for a residence permit, rather than from the date of its approval. This amendment may save several years for obtaining a Portuguese passport.
Under previous legislation, foreign residents of Portugal were eligible to apply for citizenship five years after the approval of their residence permit in the country. However, due to serious delays with the country's immigration authorities, the process of obtaining a residence permit can take up to two or more years. The new law is designed to eliminate this injustice.
Portugal has also introduced the Nationality Platform, a part of ongoing efforts to streamline and expedite the process of obtaining Portuguese nationality.
The amendments have not yet entered into force. The law is submitted for signature to the president of the country, who can approve it, veto it or send it to the Constitutional Court for consideration.
