Portuguese president vetoes the “More housing” bill to amend the Golden Visa program

  • 14
The Portuguese Parliament had already voted to approve the new housing bill aimed at simplifying the access to buying and renting properties for local residents earlier this summer. But now the president has returned the document for revision.

What has happened? The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has rejected the "More Housing" law, which includes amendments to the Golden Visa program.  We remind that that in July the bill had been approved by the Parliament, but now the president has sent it back to Parliament for amendments.

What does it mean? The President did not pass the bill in its current form and sent it back to Parliament for revision. And this means that the Golden Visa program continues to work according to the old rules.

The time frames. This decision means that it will take at least another month before the bill can be passed. And the country’s Golden Visa program will be available in its current form until then.

After the approval of the new bill by Parliament, the immigration professionals noted that even if the bill had been directly ratified, the amendments would not have come into force until mid-September. In the case of other scenarios, as it happened now, the terms increase at an exponential rate.
