Romania Has Introduced a 6-month Digital Nomad Visa

  • 8
It does not require employment for a local employer unlike other types of permits.

What happened? The Romanian government has published a new law allowing foreigners to obtain a six-month digital nomad visa. From now on applicants can stay in the country without having a local employer.

Requirements for applicants:

  • Foreigners must either be employed abroad or own a company registered abroad for 3 years before applying. They should strive to continue their economic activities abroad using information technology.
  • Candidates must demonstrate sufficient monthly income at least three times higher than the average salary before taxes in Romania. That means, at least € 3,700. Such income must be maintained for six months before applying for a visa and the entire period of its validity.
  • Applicants must provide an employment contract, identity documents, company registration certificate, company and industry contact details, information about their role, and a letter of intent with a detailed description of the purpose of their stay and activities, as well as travel tickets, medical insurance, proof of sufficient financial resources and a certificate of non-conviction. Documents may need additional apostille and translation. The immigration authority may request additional documents at its discretion.
  • Company owners must provide documents confirming that it has been registered abroad for at least three years, proof of remote administration, and the absence of tax debts in their home country.
  • The visa is issued for six months and can be extended if the applicant meets all the requirements.

Why though? Romania's economy is growing and experiencing a significant shortage of labor, which is a common problem across Europe. By offering a digital nomad visa, Romania seeks to diversify migrant flows and promote economic growth.
